The former St. Patrick Convent at 100 Parker St. in Lawrence will be converted into as many as 10 units of affordable housing. This renovation will transform the former convent, which has been vacant for two years, into 10 homes for deserving families, while preserving the beauty and dignity of this classic architectural structure.

This project is our priority for the next three years. It represents the greatest opportunity and challenge Merrimack Valley Habitat has ever faced. The renovation will have a powerful impact on the Merrimack Valley community where the need is the most acute.

Nicely positioned at the end of a quiet street in Lawrence, we broke ground at this site in February of 2010.  In spite of challenges that included a cooperative effort with the City of Lawrence to address existing and extensions of the sewer line, enthusiasm on the part of funders like the Womens Fund of Essex County, volunteers, including our monthly Women's Build groups, and the homeowners, the Mota family has run high.  The single family home is well on its way to completion and the family should be able to enjoy summer 2011 in their new home.

April 2009

After the devastating fire in January 2008, reconstruction of fourof the buildings levelled by the fire began almost immediately. They were completed in 2009, thanks to donations that allowed us to use contractors to speed the process along and the dedication of our volunteers.

.
The Reyes family moved into their single-family home at 382 Market Street in March 2009 after a 14-month delay caused by the fire. Two other families took possession of the duplex at 390 Market Street soon after.  And the Mbiyes and another family moved into their homes in the winter of 2009.  The final duplex should be completed by June 2011 when we will welcome two more Habitat homeowners.  More than 1750 sweat equity hours have gone into the building of these homes!

All four buildings (one single-family home and three duplexes) in the Market Common complex are being constructed to Energy Star standards, which means they will be 15-30 percent more energy efficient than a traditionally built home. This is achieved by extra insulation, thicker doors and windows, energy-efficient appliances and heating systems, compact fluorescent light bulbs, and low-flow toilets and showerheads.
