- Bring a positive attitude and be ready to work!
- Plan to arrive at the construction site by 8:30 a.m. You will be greeted by a Habitat representative who will collect waivers and make sure everyone signs the daily log-in sheet.
- Once the whole group arrives, the construction director and site supervisor will go over safety instructions, where tools and materials are kept on the site, and the plan for the day. The group will then be broken into small groups and matched with a project depending on skills and interests.
- Habitat provides tools: hammers, nail aprons, tape measures, basic power tools etc. But if you’d like to bring your own tools please do so. (Note: We don’t allow personal pneumatic tools on the site.)
- We generally finish the workday by 4:30 p.m.
- We try to inform volunteers of the projects/tasks they will undertake on their volunteer day beforehand, but more often than not our construction plans change last minute. Please be flexible and prepared for plans to change.
- Be prepared to work rain, snow or shine. For best results, dress for all weather and in clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.
- Bring a hat and work gloves.
- Bring a raincoat.
- Bring extra warm clothes.
- Wear boots or sneakers.
- Bring sunscreen. (in the summer)
- Bring water and a lunch. (We prefer volunteers to bring a lunch, but there are local eateries in the area if anyone forgets lunch.)
- Please help us keep our sites clean and organized. Before you leave for the day, please make sure all the tools, electrical cords, and materials that were used are returned to the proper location.
